“The impact of supplier reliability on customer demand”

Nicole DeHoratious (co-authors Nathan Craig and Ananth Raman)

Abstract:

To set service levels, firms must understand how changes in service affect customer demand. We find increases in two dimensions of supplier reliability, consistency and recovery, to be associated with significant increases in customer orders. We define consistency as the probability that a supplier delivers in the current period conditional on availability in the prior period and recovery as the probability that a supplier delivers in the current period conditional on a stockout in the prior period. Customers use past supplier performance on these two dimensions to build beliefs about supplier capabilities and hence about future supplier performance. Our study not only provides a method for estimating the impact of changes in supplier performance on customer demand but it also quantities the influence of supplier reliability on customer order volume using data from Hugo Boss, a manufacturer of branded apparel.
